at the united nations general assembly? pakistan is here because it believes in multilateralism. each september, we return to this great city and this grand scheme so we can reaffirm the presence pls and values of multilateralism. it is and has been one of the abiding central points of our central policy. we are committed to the deal of the united nations. to us, the ideal is very simple. we can do more together than we can apart. we can solve complex problems by consensus rather than by yiewn unilateralism. multilateral cooperations deals with global challenges, old and new in our independent world. as we grow more than and more dependent on each other, the space for unilateralism and unidimensional question is strengths. those skeptical of the future of multilateralism are living in the past. our future, collective future, is bright, and it's the nations in multilateralism that safeguard this future. mr. president, pakistan believes in the promise of the united nations over the scorch of war. the world governed by rules and norms of civility of decency and good will creating a better future f

with the international theme, the united nations general assembly is meeting in new york city this week. during this break we will show you some of the speeches from earlier this week. first up, syria's u.n. representative followed by the ambassador from egypt and later libya's acting prime minister. these speeches altogether last about an hour. [speaking in native tongue] [speaking in native tongue] >> translator: present at the 66th session, allow me to congratulate you as your actions as president of the general assembly. i wish you success in your endeavors to promote the interests of our international organization. i also pay tribute to your predecessor and express to him our appreciation for successfully presiding over last year's session. ladies and gentlemen, it's only normal for me to start by addressing the current situation in syria. our position in regard to the situation and to the sequence of events unfolding inside and outside our country. there is no doubt that the positions of states are uncondition my -- undeniably governed by their constraintses and demand stemming therefrom.

of the united nations but it will become an observer if the general assembly votes. this will get them access to membership and it is a step forward. i would not be in favor of this if united states had put forward any comprehensive peace proposal as president obama has announced. one, a freeze on all is really settlements and also based on the 1967 borders. if they would put forward that proposal as a basis point of negotiation, both the palestinians and the carter center would be in favor of peace talks based on those issues. the israelis are not willing to accept those proposals and president obama is not willing to make that effort. as an alternative to the stalemate, we reluctantly would support the palestinian move for recognition in the general assembly. >> one final question, what can you in the carter center do to help educate the members of congress on working in developing countries with respect for the individuals rather than going in with a heavy hand? >> nothing. to the security council, probably, but certainly to the general assembly where all the members of the united nations have a chance to vote. my guess is that the palestinians will get 140 or 150 nations who will vote for their becoming a state. this will not change the occupation of palestine by the israelis, and it will just make -- if the united states does veto the security council, then they will not become a fully recognized member of the united nations, but they will become an unofficial recognized observer, and this would give them certain access to membership in international organizations, and it would be a step forward. i would not be in favor of this if the united states had put forward any sort of comprehensive peace proposal. as president obama has announced on two major occasions, one a freeze on all israeli settlements inside palestine, and also, based on the 1967 borders -- if the united states had put forward that proposal as a basis for negotiation, then both the palestinians and the carter center would be in favor of peace talks based on those two issues, but the israelis a
